Sergéi Rachmaninoff's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is undoubtedly a favorite among the audience.
Sunday afternoon confirmed this as a well-attended crowd filled over two-thirds of the Auditorio San Pedro to listen to this piece performed by Eduardo de la Vega, accompanied by La Súper, the Orchestra of the Monterrey School of Music and Dance, from which the local performer graduated.
The choice of this concerto was also prompted by the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Russian composer's birth on April 1st.
De la Vega is a postgraduate student at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, and it's evident that his learning and experience abroad shine through.
The pianist delivered a very balanced interpretation, devoid of excessive passion or gratuitous virtuosity. He maintained the musicality of the composition while never failing to convey the melancholy and nostalgia of the second movement, adagio sostenuto.
In this regard, the clarinetist Lucero Alvarado also stood out in her solos.
